Day 1: Not So Fun

So, I begin writing this at the end of the first day. My day started with Cornflakes and is now ending in disappointment. I have never been a thin girl and in my adulthood I realize that I just eat way too much! So, this restrictive diet leaves me wanting more- but, really, what diet doesn't? Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So, I've decided to stick with this thing- and it all starts with the four day "jump start." Of course, during this four day "jump start," the options are limited. Being a person who doesn't eat seafood, I'm left with low-sodium deli turkey (with no bread?! I think not!) and chicken for proteins. Other than that, it's just vegetables, Cornflakes, low fat string cheese, skim milk, fruit, potatoes, and brown rice. All of this could be fine but for one small, tiny detail: no salt.

Chicken, with no salt?! This was a problem for me. I remained strong- not a single shaker was emptied on my plate, but, it made my food bland and lifeless. I never thought of myself as someone who overused salt, but after going an entire day with no salt on anything, I wonder what life was like back when salt was a precious commodity; I don't think I would have made it. In order to make up for this massive shortcoming, my sister and I did the only thing we could think of: make our chicken ridiculously spicy (using only the allowed spices). As a lover of spicy food, this worked for me.

However, what didn't work for me was my insatiable appetite. Due to our own poor planning, we waited longer than the prescribed four hours to eat our next meal. This was a huge mistake; it felt like I would never be full (but I didn't cheat). I found myself longing for my after dinner smoothie. This was also a huge mistake. I have discovered that I am the worst smoothie maker on the history of the planet. I'm not exactly sure where I went wrong. My fiancé insists that I have to let the strawberries thaw first and I think I put in too much ice (everything else was measured). Either way, my efforts resulted in a bland, tasteless smoothie that I deemed too unpalatable to eat. I will, of course, try again, but as for last night, I substituted my smoothie with some applesauce.

I can't wait for my Cornflakes.

What's the skinny?

Today, my sister and I start our adventure. Who here has seen the show Anna and Kristina's Grocery Bag? Yeah, we love it too. And then we thought, "Hey, we can do that!" It seems so fun when Anna and Kristina get that cookbook and decide which recipes to try. So yeah, we're totally ripping on Anna and Kristina, but its all in good fun.

Our first book was a lot of fun to pick out and we finally settled on the Flat Belly Diet Cookbook. Which turned out to be a bigger challenge than we had meant. We had just meant to get a fun cookbook and try a few recipes for a month and then tell anyone who'd read what we thought of the cookbook. But what is the sense of buying a diet cookbook and then not seeing if the diet itself works?

Some of the success stories in the book boast the loss of 30lbs in just one month. The plan is meant to be started with a 4 day "jump start", which Candace and I have started today. Thank the gods its only 4 days. Its a very bland and limited diet meant to cleanse the system. One woman in the book boasts losing 4 inches in the first four days alone. I am doubtful. Of course, if she did, its all water weight. We'll just have to see if our results can compare to those in the books...
